Imagine My Frustration

Imagine My Frustration
music by Duke Ellington (top left) & Gerald Wilson (near left)
lyric by Billy Strayhorn (right)

I went down to the dance; such a clown by the wall;
Invited to dance by no one at all.
The couples look fine, so charming and gay,
But nobody wants to look over my way.

So overly sad; dissatisfied; I hurt so bad I almost cried.
Imagine my frustration with no invitation to dance.
I smiled to the crowd; too tall and alert.
So the band blues went loud, but next on a flirt a voice came to me:

"What's the thrill, my dear? You're sweet as can be, but how come you're here?"
They couldn't care less about your dress.
You're in a mess and in excess.

Imagine my frustration with no invitation to dance.
Imagine my frustration with no invitation.
Imagine my frustration with no invitation to dance.
